son said daddy, why'd you have to go and be so mean? daddy said son, it's the way my daddy treated me son said daddy, i don't understand daddy said that's what keeps a boy from bein' a man sometimes you just got to keep hush and let it be son said daddy, did your daddy make you mow the grass? daddy said son, if i didn't he'd whoop my ass son said daddy, i don't understand he said my daddy taught me how to raise a son and be a man but he never taught me how to make love last son said daddy, what do you mean? and he said lord, i'd give all that i own if i could bring that damn woman home but she ain't talked to me since i walked away she got cold and i got the fear she's a teacher now and i'm just sittin' here sippin' on a beer in the middle of a sunny day son said daddy, why do birds make nests in trees? daddy said son, it's to keep away from the bees son said daddy, i don't understand daddy said son, one day maybe you can but it don't make a goddamn lick of sense to me son said daddy, what do you mean? and he said lord, i'd give all that i own if i could bring that damn woman home but she ain't talked to me since i walked away she went nuts and shit got weird but it beats the hell outta just sittin' here sippin' on a beer in the middle of a sunny day son said daddy, tell me somethin' i ain't heard before daddy said son, imagine a knock on your door and every time you hear it you go downstairs to try and figure out who the hell is there but no one ever is, so you just wave a fist and curse at the air son said daddy, what do you mean? and he said lord, i'd give all that i own if i could bring that damn woman home but she ain't talked to me since i walked away she went off and moved through the years and i'm still hangin' round just a-sittin' here sippin' on a beer in the middle of a sunny day

you're stumblin' down the alleyway all alone your wallet's empty, you've got no food to eat, you're without a phone no one to call anyway, no cigarettes left to smoke the whole city's laughing, but you're not in on the joke you've got your debutante but all you really want is someone worth holding and so the candle burns and a poor boy never learns to enjoy the circles we make while the story's unfolding you never make it home, you pass out on the concrete a garbage truck rumbles along, wakes you up from your sleep you find your shoes behind the dumpster and get to your feet the city is strong and you don't know how to compete but still here you stand grabbin' the horns with your hands but you never learned to ride and so the story goes when one door is closed another door opens and you can't help but walk inside shop lights shine like a headache into the night aneurysm's settin' in, blood pressure's on the rise fire trucks barrel and scream from sun-up into the ev'ning what does it matter to you? the city's on fire, but you wouldn't have a clue you're out chasin' a song everyone knows you're wrong but you can't abide what difference does it make whether it's real or fake? you know the truth it's all the same in your mind

when you know what's gonna happen, but it hasn't happened yet when nothin' in your past is left to regret when you try to remember, but you just forget and you shed a single tear while the sad sun sets ain't it a wonder you've come a long way since the world opened its eyes to you that day i don't always have the right words to say but if it ain't too much of me to ask won't you stay, won't you stay? when the room stares into you like you're a giant elephant and you know you've been wrong, but you're too weak to repent when a hole burns in your pocket from the money you have spent and you're too lost to appreciate the sentiment all along the avalanche is gaining speed and you can't escape a storm you're trapped beneath like anything, it's only temporary you will find the storm will clear when you're ready ain't it a wonder you've come a long way since the world opened its eyes to you that day i don't always have the right words to say but if it ain't too much of me to ask won't you stay, won't you stay?

pay my tab and tip my hat to the barkeep take my leave as i walk on into the night look for the stars, but the stars don't look for me try to find the end of the road, but no end is in sight i don't wanna live, but i won't let myself die i just wanna smile, but sometimes all i can do is cry meet me in the middle of nowhere i'll be smokin' a cigarette dreamin' of the days i never got to live yet gimme three wishes, i wouldn't know what to do gimme three kisses, i'd give 'em right back to you gimme one reason why i can't find somethin' new it couldn't be i'm trapped upon this plane with nothin' left to do i don't wanna breathe, but i just can't help myself i wanna leave, but i sit still as a shelf all i need's somebody to hold me but i just want to be alone waiting for the end to be a friend and take me home maybe it's lookin' for me as i walk through the city maybe it wants me, too

about

The second in a string of three EP's, 'The Circles We Make' sees Foerg advance his psychedelic folk sound, supplementing it with elements of electronica, country, shoegaze and more. Written with the same subject-material from 'Songs About a Woman' in mind, 'Circles' presents a fresh (and slightly less optimistic) take on the madness of heartbreak and life in the aftermath.

From the liner notes (which can be acquired by downloading the EP), written by Josh Loney: 'Music is how Ben keeps himself sane. Well… Relatively sane. This latest EP paints a dreary picture. “Won’t You Stay”, written over a year ago, when romance was still in the air, is a desperate plea for love not to leave, even though it already seems a forgone conclusion. In “Sippin’ on a Beer (In the Middle of a Sunny Day)”, a man loses his woman and drinks himself into middle-aged obscurity. In “Smoke in the Alleyway”, a lonely lush passes out in the street. “One Last Cigarette” perfectly encapsulates the desolation of heartbreak. Some may listen to that song and judge Ben to be a suicide risk.'

Download 'The Circles We Make' for a glimpse into the mind of one of today's leading unknown psychedelic folk artists. Be on the lookout for the third EP and follow at soundcloud.com/benfoerg for the latest musical happenings from Ben Foerg.
